Dhaka, July 1 -  BNP
chairperson Khaleda Zia has demanded release of top leaders of ally
Jamaat-e-Islami. In a statement on Thursday, she urged the government to
stop what she said was persecution of the opposition.

BNP, the largest party in opposition, had already condemned the arrest of
Jamaat's chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad
Mojaheed and central executive committee member Delwar Hossain Sayedee in a
raft of cases.

World T20 in Bangladesh

Singapore, July 1 - 
Bangladesh will host the World Twenty20 tournament in 2014 after Sri
Lanka in 2012. This was decided a meeting of the International Cricket
Council executive board in Singapore on Thursday, according to
cricinfo.com.

Among other decisions, England will stage the 2013 Champions Trophy
while the 2015 World Cup will be held jointly by Australia and New
Zealand, the first time since 1992.

Dhaka, July 1 - The state minister for home
has called upon Islami Chhatra Shibir which
supports Jamaat-e-Islami, to not be on the
side of war criminals in the opposition
party.

Shamsul Hoque Tuku urged them to revive
democratic principles within its
organisation. Shibir has been protesting the
arrest of top Jamaat leaders on Tuesday. The
junior home minister told journalists on
Thursday the present generation Shibir did
not come out of Chhatra Sangha, which was
the former student body of Jamaat.

Outsourcing
decision was 'not fully transparent'

Dhaka, July 01 -
A meeting of the panel of economists on the government's
five-year plan held the view that the decision to contract a
private research organisation to formulate the plan's draft was
not taken in a fully transparent manner.

While one economist had threatened to quit over the matter,
others said that the panel was not consulted about this decision
of the Planning Commission. The commission, which is the
government agency dealing with the matter, contracted the Police
Research Institute (PRI) of Bangladesh to in May to draw up a

reconstituted

Dhaka, July 1 -
Twenty-three benches of the High Court have been reconstituted.
The benches will take over on July 4, when the Supreme Court
reopens after the summer vacation, a notification signed by
chief justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim said on Thursday.

Under the new arrangement, justices Md Abdul Wahhab Miah and JBM
Hasan will hear writ petitions instead of criminal ones. Junior
judge of the bench led by Justice Mohammad Anwarul Huq as been
replaced, with its jurisdiction to hear writ motions remaining
in tact.
